The Phoenix Ivy Council is volunteering at St. Mary's Food Bank later this month. If you're interested in helping out, please read this message from Stanford alumna Tracy Jaffe:

Hello Past St. Mary's Food Bank Volunteer,

I hope you are doing well. In September I sent you an invitation to join Stanford, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, and Ivy-Plus alumni at St. Mary's Food Bank to pack emergency food boxes. The food will eventually be distributed to Phoenix-area homeless shelters, senior centers, and rehabilitation centers. I'm sending you this second email because we still have a few volunteer openings. Family members age twelve and older are welcome to participate.

Our First Ever Alumni Salon

The Brown Club of Phoenix is proud to announce our first ever Alumni Salon, an event where Brown Club members gather to learn about the exciting things our fellow Arizona alumni are doing.

The first presenter is Professor Paul Espinosa '72, an award-winning Filmmaker and Professor in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. He has been involved with producing films for over 30 years, specializing in documentary and dramatic films focused on the U.S.-Mexico border region. Espinosa's films have been screened at festivals around the world and have won many awards including eight Emmys.

Using clips from a number of his films, his presentation will provide a historical and cultural journey through the border region, including: a short introduction to the historical moment which gave rise to the creation of the current border (The U.S.-Mexican War: 1846-1848); a profile of the labor recruitment system for mining in Arizona (Los Mineros); a portrait of the dramatic challenges of living as an undocumented immigrant in the U.S. (In the Shadow of the Law); and an examination of how contemporary spoken word artists utilize language to redefine cultural spaces (Taco Shop Poets).

On August 28 from noon to 2 p.m., we will meet at the new Lucky Strike Lanes in downtown Phoenix for bowling, lunch, networking and all around fun. We're even giving out fun prizes for the best (and worst) bowlers, the littlest competitors (and the most seasoned), the best outfit and more!

New Service for Brown Alumni

Looking for a job, new career, or professional growth? The Brown Alumni Relations team has created a new program that can help!

In February, Alumni Relations launched the Executive/Career Coach Referral Program. According to the launch announcement, the service is

a resource for alumni at every stage, whether actively employed or in transition, who may be facing more complex career and professional development concerns. As many alumni strive to actively manage their careers, obtain leadership positions and encounter work environment challenges, we wanted to develop a resource to assist with these types of scenarios. Alumni Relations is very pleased to offer this referral service to our alumni of a diverse, qualified pool of executive and career coaches – who are also all Brown alumni.

To ensure this program is accessible to the global alumni community, all participating alumni are at ease - and some quite prefer - to work telephonically. Therefore, alumni from smaller cities, rural areas or remote countries have access to the same coaching talent as those from major metropolitan areas.

So so if you hear of a fellow alumni working on their personal or professional branding, struggling with moving to the next professional level or exploring a career move, please let them know about Brown’s Executive/Career Coach Referral Program, the newest addition to the Brown Alumni Career Navigator.

Mike O'Neil '73 has written an article about Egypt, entitled "Egypt: Now the Hard Part"

Many thousands of Egyptians, fed up with 30 years of oppressive rule, successfully called for Mubarak's resignation. Their rhetoric is all about Democracy. If their focus remains only on Mubarak, however, they're unlikely to end up with anything resembling real democracy.. . . unless other institutions are in established and new norms of civic behavior are operative, the version of democracy that Egypt may end up with may resemble that which we have seen in numerous countries elsewhere in Africa: "One Man, One Vote, One Time."

Dr. Kay Warren

Anthropology professor Kay Warren will discuss "Human Trafficking: Criminal Prosecutions and Prevention in Transnational Perspective."

Professor Warren is the Charles C. Tillinghast Jr. '32 Professor of International Studies and Professor of Anthropology and the current Director of the Pembroke Center. She earned her PhD in Cultural Anthropology at Princeton University in 1974 and served on the senior faculties of Princeton and Harvard before coming to Brown in 2003.

According to Brown's research directory:

Professor Warren's most recent research deals with international norms, legal systems, human trafficking, and foreign aid and focuses on Colombia, Japan, and Washington. Her earlier projects focused on Guatemala and Peru. Warren's wider research agenda has involved multi-sited ethnographic studies of counterinsurgency wars, community responses to violence and peace processes, indigenous intellectuals, the anthropology of multi-cultural democracies, and gender and politics. She also works on documentary film and media issues.

She is currently working on a book project: Human Trafficking, Transnationalism, and the Law. Her most recent edited book, Japanese Aid and the Construction of Global Development: Inescapable Solutions," with David Leheny, was published in 2010.

As part of Brown's Food for Thought program, we are offering this program at no cost to the first 15 Brown Club members who register. Additional members and non-alumni guests may attend for $25 per person, which includes dinner and non-alcoholic beverages. The Brown Club of Phoenix is proud to present a Back to Class program with Biology Professor Ken Miller '70 on December 4, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Burton Barr branch of the Phoenix Public Library (see map below). Afterward, we will gather across the street at Cheuvront Restaurant and Wine Bar for wine, cheese and great conversation.

Professor Miller will present a program entitled "Only a Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America's Soul." Miller, a cell biologist, has taught at Brown for almost 30 years.

He is the co-author of four different high school and college biology textbooks which are used by millions of students nationwide.

In 2007, Miller was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and received the Exploratorium's Outstanding Educator Award.

He is the author of Finding Darwin's God (A Scientist's Search for Common Ground between God and Evolution), and Only a Theory (Evolution and the Battle for America's Soul) Both books are available at a bookstore near you or by clicking the title to order at Amazon.com.

The Brown Club of Phoenix is planning a trip to the ballpark this season and we'd like to know which game you are interested in attending with us.

We've narrowed the field down to three Sunday afternoon games. For those unfamiliar with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chase Field, Sunday games are typically the most family friendly. Start times are in the early afternoon (1:10 p.m.) and kids are permitted to run the bases after the game is over. The three dates we've selected also have giveaways for youngsters 12 and under.

Congratulations to Sean Morey '99. The Arizona Cardinals Special Teams Captain has been named to the 2009 NFL Pro Bowl, one of five Cardinals honored this year along with quarterback Kurt Warner, wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, and safety Adrian Wilson.

Governor Napolitano Q & A

Yesterday evening, Phoenix Ivy Council members and their guests were treated to an evening with Governor Janet Napolitano at the Heard Museum.

Over 100 people attended and mingled for about half an hour while the governor graciously agreed to take pictures with each school's alumni. (Check this blog in the coming days for our own pic with the Guv!) Our very own Doug Heller '85 started off the event with an introduction about the Phoenix Ivy Council. He was followed by Susan Freeman (Mt. Holyoke) who gave a warm introduction for the governor, highlighting her many professional accomplishments.

Then it was time for the soon-to-be Secretary of Homeland Security.

The governor started out by explaining that the budget and economy are the highest priorities for the state now. She noted that most states, except those with oil revenue, are having budget problems. The governor also spoke about her role on President-elect Obama's transition board, which began shortly after the Democratic National Convention (but was kept private before the election). She described some of the board's tasks, which include identifying people who can help set up the transition, filling White House personnel positions and identifying issues that the president will need to take up during the transition and his first 100 days in office.

Governor Napolitano acknowledged the rumors of a pending cabinet offer and stated, "If I can play a role, I would be privileged to do so." She told attendees that it would be a tough personal decision for her to make because she wants to finish the job she started, but when the president calls one to serve at time of crisis, it is difficult to refuse. She said she must ultimately consider where she can best serve the country.

She talked about the Department of Homeland Security in response to another question and listed a number of agencies that have become a part of that department to underscore the varying challenges of that cabinet position. The governor noted that the agency, the third largest in the federal government, has a branding problem and must devise a coherent intelligence plan for dealing with disasters, whether natural or man made. She also noted that whoever becomes Secretary of Homeland Security will have a major role in immigration reform.

The governor was then asked for advice on how to approach state legislators about threatened cuts to university funding. She advised the questioner to talk about the impact a university education has had on his life and his children's lives. Merely reciting facts and figures loses its impact after a while, but telling personal stories leaves a greater impact.

When asked about her thoughts on the 2010 Senate race against John McCain, Governor Napolitano joked that a lot of things could happen, but she is fairly confident that Arizona will continue to have 2 senators. She acknowledged rumors about a potential challenge to McCain by stating that if she moves to DC, it will make a Senate run impractical and is something she will have to consider. Regardless, she believes that the 2010 race will be hard fought and will focus on the economy, much as the recent election has.

The governor touched on the issue of immigration again in response to a question about an upcoming federal stimulus package. She informed the audience that her staff is putting together a proposal to build infrastructure, specifically ports of entry (not a wall), along the border. She believes that this proposed $500 billion dollar package may be the only significant money spent by the federal government for a while, so Arizona should be prepared to seek as much help in this area as possible.

The cost of getting elected was the subject of another question to the governor. She noted that the connection between money and politics is key because of the need for candidates to get the word out to voters. The governor lamented the fact that TV ad time is sold at a higher rate for political ads than for consumer goods. Locally, she said that although, the clean elections system has its good and bad points, it has had the positive effect of holding down the cost of races here in Arizona. The system does have its quirks, however. The governor illustrated that by pointing out that her 2002 opponent ran a traditional campaign for which President Bush headlined a major fundraising event. She said that, because of matching fund rules, the President ended up raising $250,000 for her campaign as well, making her the only Democrat to benefit from President Bush's fundraising efforts.

The final question of the night concerned the health of the state retirement fund. The governor said the fund has lost some money, which is to be expected in this economy, but was not as much as feared. She said that they are monitoring the funding and expects that the state will have to adjust the amount employees contribute to the system because of the recent lower returns.

"Each of the eight honorees has played as an undergraduate on an Ivy League football team, and more important, has become preeminent in his chosen field. Each has been selected by the football alumni association of his university in consultation with its Athletic Director."

Battle of Unbeaten Ivy Teams

The Brown University football team will be taking on Penn in a battle of the top two teams in the Ivy League on Saturday at noon in Philadelphia. The Bears, fresh off a 27-7 win over Cornell, are tied with the Quakers atop the Ivy League standings with perfect 3-0 conference records.

Game Notes (courtesy of Brown Sports Information):
Brown (4-2, 3-0 Ivy) earned a 27-7 victory over Cornell before 9,298 at Brown Stadium to extend its Ivy record to 3-0 for the first time in school history last Saturday. While Brown won Ivy titles in 1976, 1999 and 2005, the closest Brown had come to a 3-0 Ivy record was 1975, starting with a 2-0-1 league mark. Penn (4-2, 3-0 Ivy), the only other Ivy team without a league loss, booted three field goals on its way to a 9-7 win over Yale at Franklin Field.

Brown vs. Penn- 77th Meeting:
Brown and Penn have met 76 times, dating back to 1895, with the Quakers holding a 54-20-2 series lead. Brown has won the last three games over Penn, including a 31-17 victory over the Quakers last year in Providence. Penn's last win over the Bears was in 2004, a 20-16 decision in Philadelphia. In 1998, Brown defeated Penn in the highest scoring game in Ivy League football history, 58-51.

The Story Line:
The only two unbeaten teams in the Ivy League battle for first place with a contrast of styles. Brown comes in with a high-powered offense (averaging 24.33 points per game) and a slew of big playmakers, including quarterback Michael Dougherty ’09 and wide receivers Buddy Farnham ’10 and Bobby Sewall ’10 (pictured above). The Bears’ passing offense averages 278 yards per game, but the Quakers have allowed just 130 passing yards per game and lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 13 points per game. Hi everyone!

Thanks for checking in. I'm pleased to report that the Brown Club's acceptance party was a success. Five students attended and almost all of them have decided to attend Brown! We hope to make this a yearly event, so please let us know if you'd be interested in hosting next year's party. Many, many thanks to BASC chair Dee Dee Sturr for opening her heart and home to the lot of us.

We don't have any other events scheduled in the summer months but the Phoenix Ivy Council is planning a happy hour this month. (See the post below for details.) If you're in town and looking to beat the heat, stop by and chat.

What: Handicapping the 2008 Presidential Race

The 2008 presidential race is shaping up to be an exciting contest of particular interest to Arizonans. The Harvard Club of Phoenix is honored to have three distinguished speakers to discuss the presidential candidates, the electoral process and the major campaign issues. Bruce Merrill of the Cronkite School of Journalism will moderate a discussion between Randy Pullen and Don Bivens who lead the two major political parties in Arizona. Please join us for an evening of education, dialogue and debate. Note that the doors will open early to allow time for our members to converse before the program begins. Seating is limited so please register early. All reservations must be paid in advance. Special Time and Location!

Ivy Council's Night at the Symphony

When: Saturday, March 29, 2008 Ivy League pre-concert reception and Phoenix Symphony concert
Where: Symphony Hall, 75 N. 2nd St., Phoenix, AZ 85004
Time: Reception at 6:30p.m. in the Green Room. Concert to follow at 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $60 per person

The Harvard Club of Phoenix, the Ivy Council and the Phoenix Symphony cordially invite you to an Ivy League pre-concert reception and Phoenix Symphony concert. Relax and network with the Phoenix Symphony Resident Conductor, Lawrence Golan, Orchestra members and Ivy League Alumni.

THE PIANO MEN featuring the Music of Elton John & Billy Joel Award-winning pianist and singer Jim Witter takes you on a tour of the greatest hits of Billy Joel and Elton John.

Tickets are $60 and seating is limited to the first 100 people that RSVP! Ticket prices include a 20% discount and reception fees. There will be coffee, tea, heavy hors doeuvres, and a cash bar. Ticket price includes one premium cocktail, glass of wine, domestic or imported beer, light beverage.

Phoenix Suns Basketball

When: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 Suns vs. Portland Trail Blazers
Where: US Airways Arena
Cost: $53.50 per ticket. First come, first served

Brown Alumni have an opportunity for Suns tickets for the final game of the season on April 16th vs. Portland Trail Blazers. The seats are center section, second level, in rows 10 - 14.

If you are interested, please send an email either to Carolyn Avon, MAT '73 or to the Suns directly at the email addresses below. Payment can be made by credit card or debit card with credit option. Please include your card number, expiration date, name as it appears on the card and number of tickets you'd like by Monday, March 3, 2008 (there may be availability after this date also). Please also include a phone number. The tickets will be held at the Will Call Window. Please include the name under which you would like to pick up your tickets.

There also is an opportunity with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Brown Club BASC Acceptance Party

When: Sunday, April 20, 2008 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Acceptance Party for prospective Brown students
Where: at the home of Dee Dee Sturr 82, BASC Chairperson.
Cost: Free!

This year, we will have a gathering with students who are admitted to Brown, class of 2012. The students can hear from those of us that have been there, and it will be a chance for us all to see each other.

Adventures in Hiking

On Saturday, January 19th, six Brown alums met at Pinnacle Peak Park to hike with Bob Salter '63. Brown Club President Keelan Bodow reports that several alums who hiked with the group were in town from Pennsylvania and learned about the event from the web site. Keelan also reports that it was a perfect hiking day, and Bob Salter was a fantastic guide.

Phoenix Ivy Council Party

Turnout was high at Saturday's party at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. We hope to have more pictures to post later, but for now you'll have to make do with this one of Doug Heller and Keelan Bodow chatting near the dessert table.

Here's to do-it-yourself Bailey's droppers in brownies and rosemary in the creme brule.

For those who haven't heard, the Phoenix Ivy Council is having a party this Saturday at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art from 7 to 11p.m. The cost is $75 per person.

Last year's party - set up by our very own Doug Heller and Jennifer Prendiville - was a big success and this year's event is sure to please as well.

Hi there! My name is Faith Klepper, class of 1993, and I'm the newsletter editor for the Brown Club of Phoenix. We have started this blog to help Arizona alumni connect with the club and each other.

Eventually, we hope to host a web page of our very own, but for now we will be posting news and information on upcoming activities and events right here.

To start off, I am posting the long awaited second edition of our newsletter from August 2007. Due to e-mail distribution problems, we were unable to send it out to everyone last fall but here it is. We hope you enjoy it.
